Luke Skywalker and Beowulf

Luke Skywalker and Beowulf are two great heroes. Luke Skywalker is the hero that is like an everyday person. He is someone whom you wouldn’t expect to be a hero. Unlike Luke Skywalker, Beowulf is the type of hero whom you automatically assume will kick butt. While both of these men come from different backgrounds, they both share a few common characteristics such as, bravery, strength, and compassion.
In perspective, both Luke Skywalker and Beowulf live in a place or a time period that is completely different that what people are used to today, but Luke Skywalker vastly different than Beowulf in many ways. An example is during the movie Star Wars, Luke Skywalker goes out to look for R2D2 because he “ran” away. During his mission, he gets his butt kicked by the “Sand People.” Where as Beowulf fights and conquers. In the epic of Beowulf, Beowulf is the only person to fight the monster and not flee.
Although Luke Skywalker and Beowulf have many differences, they shared some common characteristics that a true hero should display. When R2D2 leaves, Luke Skywalker goes on a hunt for him with the underlying thought in his mind that the “Sand People” are out there and are dangerous. He still searches for R2D2 and when the “Sand People” appear, he does not run from them he attempts to fight them off, but instead he becomes defeated. Much like this, Beowulf fights off the monster while the other seamen run away because they are too scared. The most important characteristic that these two hero’s share is: compassion. In both stories, Luke Skywalker and Beowulf are very similar because they both have a goal. Luke Skywalker’s goal was to rescue R2D2 and Beowulf’s goal was to fight the monster and kill the dragon. Both of these characters display compassion because they are fighting to save something that they care about.
Both Luke Skywalker and Beowulf are heroic because they display all the traits that a true hero should display. Even when situations don’t go their way or they are put in unpleasant conditions, both characters step up and perform their duty as a hero.
