Iago's Plan

1. Explain Iago’s plan as it stands at the end of Act I. After reading the beginning of Act II, do you believe he will be successful? What is leading you to your conclusion?
Iago’s plan is to have Othello to fail at his position. Iago was demoted to Lieutenant and Othello was held to at a higher position than him. Also, it doesn’t hurt to mention that Iago secretly loves Desdemona. His plan was to destroy Othello’s marriage to Desdemona. Desdemona’s father, Brabanzio, who is the Venetian senator holds high ranks with the officials. Iago thinks that if he can turn her father away from Othello, then he can be ranked higher than Othello.
Iago tells Brabanzio that his daughter, Desdemona, and Othello are having sex. Her father gets very mad. Othello and Desdemona do not know this is going on. Brabanzio searches madly for his daughter and claims that she has been stolen from him by magic “charms.”
I believe that Iago’s plan of destroying Desdemona and Othello’s marriage will be true. I think that Othello and Desdemona will try and stay together because their love for each other is true, but Desdemona’s father, Brabanzio, will not tolerate it because Othello is a Moor and he is on ends with him after what he had heard form Iago.
What leads to this conclusion is that at the end of Act II Scene ii, Iago wants to make Othello and Desdemona enemies. Iago lusts after Desdemona and is very obsessive. He suspects that Othello slept with Emilia so he plans on telling Desdemona this. Also, Iago plans to turn Othello away from Desdemona by telling him that he slept with her. If this does not work, then Iago plans on telling Othello that she is having relations with Cassio.
